I studied in a college which was 150 km away from my home. During those days I used to go home once in a month. On one such trip that I met her in the train.
Both of us were sitting face to face by the side of the window. She was wearing a blue salwar. She had broad eyebrows and small brown eyes. She combed her hair from left to right and was using a clip to keep her hair in tact. Her hair extended up to the midriff and she seemed to be of same age or 1-2 yrs younger to me. I was watching her from the time I sat near her and between we were exchanging glances.
It was a hot after noon. I was very thirsty n thought of buying a bottle of water when the train reached the next station. As soon as the train reached the station, I started waving my hands towards the water seller. He was busy selling in the near by compartment which I could see thru the window. Just as he started walking towards me, the train started moving and I couldn’t buy. I felt as though I would die of thirst.
Just then I saw an outstretched hand with a bottle of water. It was her with a beautiful smile. I drank 2 big gulps from the bottle and felt really rejuvenated. With a smile I thanked her and asked her where she was heading for.
“ to Calicut “ she replied. She had a mature voice but rather shy.
“ u study der “ I asked. She leaned towards me and said “ yes, Bsc maths 1st yr. U?
“ I am doing my 3yr B.Tech in Tvm”. So y r u here in Tvm. Relatives?
“ I came to see my grandma. She is ill”
“ok. How is she now?”
“ Better “
Our conversation went on n on and I didn’t realize how time went so fast. Usually before my station reached, I used to go to the door and wait there. But this time I didn’t realize that my station has reached. In fact it was she who pointed out that to me.
I took my bag and rushed to the door to get down. I even forgot to say a good bye. Just as I got down, the train started moving. I ran towards her window and was waving my hand at her but she didn’t even look at me and was busy writing something.
“ she forgot me in a second “ I thought
As the train picked up speed, she and her window was moving away from me fast. Then I saw her hand stretching out of the window and she threw a folded paper towards me. I took it. It wasn't a folded paper but a folded 10 rs note. Inside there was a 1 re coin to prevent it frm going back to the train or to the rails and it also contained 958612…….. her cell no.
We spent nearly one and a half hours talking to each other. By the time I left the station I knew all abt her family, her ambitions, her school days, her 1st love and her no. but irony…. Neither I nor she didn’t ask each others name.
Dial 958612...... and ask!! Again, in WS words, What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
